Today I felt like eating a banana split. I don't know where that craving was coming from since it is kind of cold outside, but that is what I wanted and I had to do something about it. Luckily for my health, I did not have the traditional ingredients required to make a banana split : chocolate sauce, caramel sauce, ice cream, Maraschino cherry, whip cream, etc. Instead I had fresh fruits, nuts, dark chocolate and coconut whip cream. I figured this would be a great opportunity to reno the traditional frozen dessert into a healthier one. I now present to you The Reno Banana Split!
Tip: If you do not want to make your own coconut whip cream, you can buy the one in a can. It is made with real coconut cream (non dairy and lactose free), and only has 30 calories and 2 grams of sugar per 4 tbsp.
You can also make your own coconut milk based nice cream (dairy free ice cream) if you prefer to get closer to the ‘real' banana split. I suggest you to make your nice cream instead of buying it since the store-bought one have a tendency to contain a fair amount of sugar.
